4Very good TV with typical LCD shortcomings
By Review Man
Got this, my first HDTV, for $749 total delivered. Seems like a great deal. Has the AA01 panel:PROS: Very good HD picture, which becomes stunning with good source material (after calibrating the picture); excellent SD picture (better than the good CRT TV it replaced); tons of controls for picture calibration; streaming Netflix is great, the Pandora app has become my household's new source for music of all types, either through the TV speakers or piped to the stereo; ethernet makes upgrading firmware and internet apps very easy; lots of connectivity; easy to set up; light; swivel stand works well; power efficient; doesn't get hot; no noise or buzz; no dead or stuck pixels; has analog audio out jack (important for old A/V receivers); functions as an outstanding computer monitor (with DVI-to-HDMI cable); glossy screen helps picture and repels dust; can't even notice the red "Touch of Color" design.CONS: Though black levels are generally very good, when the screen and room are both dark you can see some flashlighting around the corners and some bleedthrough of the backlight; very fast motion on screen will cause brief pixelization and loss of picture clarity (has to be very fast motion -- football and other sports look great); picture quality degrades quickly as you move off-center (though not as much as in some other LCD TVs); requires major picture calibration out of the box (I used settings found in reviews of this TV on the web, tweaked them a bit to preference, and the picture's much better, though it's hard to get it right); most of the current internet apps are useless; the factory preset modes are useless.Overall it's a very good TV, with a picture that can sometimes be mesmerizing. And I'm glad I paid a bit extra for the C650's internet connectivity and glossy screen. But my main complaints - backlight bleedthrough, motion pixelization and off-center picture quality - lead me to believe that my next TV might be a plasma. Sound is adequate, neither a pro or con really. Four stars.

5Excellent TV
By ZS
I'm not going to focus on picture quality, there are plenty of reviews for the other Samsung TV's in this class (LN**C6/5**)that will give you some idea. The short of it: Excellent picture quality, and superb build quality. Instead I'm going to focus on the extra "Internet@TV" features and it's media playback abilities. After all, that's the only reason to spend an extra hundred or two on this model right? Some of the Internet@TV apps aren't as gimmicky as you might expect. Sure, there are some really awful games, some of which are trials. I certainly wouldn't expect to buy any games for this TV. Graphically, it isn't a capable machine. They sort of remind me of a set of mediocre 2D-only flash games with really poor framerates. So, game apps are out. That said, a small collection of the apps are actually very useful. Netflix works great, and did so right out of the box. Pandora is excellent, and unlike the online version, has no ads with a free account. The youtube app also works great, although searching for videos can be a pain using the remote since you have to use some sort of phone-like input method for typing. It does have T9 and a decent dictionary to speed things up. There are a couple of other video streaming apps that seem polished including Hulu Plus, Vudu, Blockbuster, and CinemaNow. Hulu Plus is still in beta, but after trying out a few of their samples, it seems well made. Vudu, Blockbuster, and CinemaNow are too expensive for my tastes, renting movies for 25%-30% of the price to own isn't worth it to me. And buying a digital copy from either place without also having a physical copy doesn't cut it. Especially if they are the same price. There are twitter and facebook apps, but a lot of the use of those apps comes from communication. I haven't yet tried either of them, but I can't imagine trying to type out any sort of response using the remote. There's also a daily motion app, that works well and fits in the youtube category. Google maps is almost useful, but like the rest of the graphically intensive apps, there's a fluidity issue. Scrolling the map is a little choppy, and typing in addresses to get directions is slow using the remote. When you throw in the time it takes to load the app, type the addresses, and get your directions, you might as well have got up from the couch and used the computer. It's at least a cool toy to show friends. The slideshow apps GettyImages, and Picasa Web Albums sort of fall in the same category. They both get a bunch of pics from the web, fine art, and photos, and display them as a slideshow on the TV. They work well enough, but could use a little polish; it would have been great if there was a smooth transition between pics, but both just lazily switch from one photo to the next. There is a Napster app, but I don't have a subscription to try it out. I'd imagine it would work fairly well, and have a similar flow to the Pandora app, which is great. The AP news ticker app is pretty well done. Instead of interrupting TV, it puts a small ticker at the bottom of the screen and displays various news bytes. At any time, you can change the category or call up the news article being displayed to read it in it's entirety complete with pictures. All without any interruption. The last app of sorts is the Yahoo! app, although what it amounts to is a gadget bar that runs across the bottom of the screen. You can call the gadget bar at any time by pressing the Yahoo button on the remote. There's a bunch of gadgets you can get for it, and a few redundancies with the apps. In a lot of ways it is more useful. For example, the Accuweather app is fairly lame and not really worth the time it takes to open it. But, the Accuweather gadget is quite a bit better - faster to open, doesn't interrupt what you are watching, has a five day forcast, radar, weather alarms, and a bunch of small bits of weather info. The news and finance gadgets aren't bad either. The other reason you might want this TV over the lesser models it it's media playing capabilities. The TV itself doesn't play a whole host of formats. It doesn't seem to directly support a lot of fairly common codecs like h264 or AC3; it's possible that the videos I had in those formats, the TV just didn't like for other reasons like resolution, though. Your best bet are the older mpeg4 codecs like xvid/divx with simple mp3 audio in an avi container. This only matters though for videos that are on a device directly connected to a TV, like a flash drive or external hard drive. If you are using the networking capabilities to stream video from another computer, it can support just about every format and resolution. It has never failed to play a video from my PC. And those videos are in just about every format around. It's played DVD VOB's directly from a folder, mkv and avi containers, h264, xvid/divx, AC3 audio, etc. Here's the key: You have to install a proper DLNA media streamer on the computer. Only one free one exists that'll to the job. Pay attention now. You have to use Serviio if you have any chance of playing all those formats. Serviio.org has all the details and a great community of Samsung TV users that have had excellent experience using the program. Some gripes with streaming on the TV though is that you can't fast forward or rewind yet. I believe Samsung is working on a technique to do it properly, but it's tricky to do from a DLNA protocol standpoint. Serviio also does a great job of grabbing meta-data (video art, genre, director etc.) from the title of the file. With Serviio, media streaming is a pleasure. Some other things to note, Samsung does seem to be supporting the platform - every week or so, some apps have updates, the TV itself has had an update or two since I bought it about a month ago. With it connected to the internet all of this is painless and fast. All in all, it's a great purchase. For the price I paid, the extra features were worth it. But it may not be for some others. If you don't want/need network media streaming capabilities, there isn't any reason to get this TV over it's lower cost brothers. For me, it was great having exactly two cables connected to the TV: Power and Ethernet. That's all I need for all my media.

4Best picture all around
By Ricky D
Looked at many LCD TV's and the picture quality on a Samsung is hard to beat. Controls are easy to use on this set and hooking it up to a standard DVD player with HDMI cable produces a Movie theater picture response. Also if you subscribe to Cable and have an HD Cable Box...hook up with an HDMI cable and the picture is outstanding...Amazon took over a week for delivery (from TX)...shipping company was great in keeping me informed on exact delivery date....when it arrived the delivery driver brought it in, unpacked it, and made sure it was working....The best part was the overall cost...buying it thru Amazon saved me over $200 from the regular store price, and also had free shipping and no tax...so it was a savings all around.

5Can't beat it for the size and price!
By D. bair
This Hitachi 40" television is great. The picture quality is super. The sound is great also. I'm on a budget and after doing a month research on various televisions until I decided on this one,I'm well pleased. Now will it hold up? I hope to get many years of good service out of this television. The price is the best compared to other televisions of the same size. I would recommend this tv to anyone.

This TV is really nice especially with its reasonable price. The price was almost the lowest when compared with other 40" LCD tvs, but it had some features many others didn't.

5Great tv for the price
By sagespyder
My mom's old tv broke so I decided to buy her a new tv for X-mas. After doing many searches I came across this one. It is my mom's first flat screen and she loved it when it was delivered. I visited during X-mas and after buying her an HDMI cable you can really tell the difference and she was even happier. The only problem was the sound since the speakers are in the back but I intended on buying her a sound bar anyways. She loves her new tv and I believe that the tv fits anyone not too picky about name brands and needs to save some money.

5Cobyv surprise.
By Clyde.
I bought my Coby at a local store after my 37 inch LG gave up the ghost after four (4) years and about a month after my extended warranty expired. I've purchased Coby headphones one pair sounded great but didn't last long, but what can you expect for $2.00, from Amazon, but never any other Coby items. The 40 inch Coby has a beautiful clear picture. Although I play it through a dedicated sound system, the sound is good through the TV speakers. So far so good, I'll see how long it last. I bought the five year extended warranty just to be on the safe side. I hope and pray it last longer the LG a brand I will never buy again.

1TV had problem after 6 hrs of use (over 2 days) - also this is a 720p LCD TV, not 1080p
By phwang
Bought this TV new from Fry's on 5/29/11. Used it that night for a couple of hours. Then watched TV again next day. On the 3rd day, the remote nor the TV pwoer switch would not work... had to turn the surge protector off then on again, now remote was able to turn the tv on. Watched TV and channel surfed for about 30 min, now gets to a channel with sound but no image (black screen). Unable to turn off TV using remote nor TV button. Had to turn off surge protector again and on - works now. Emailed Coby tech support - awaiting response... will update my review afterwards, if I get a response.Update:This is the crappy response I got - tech support does not even understand that the unit is broken.-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We're delighted to have you as a customer and want to ensure that you can begin using and enjoying your COBY product right away. I bought a new video card for my PC with HDMI out intending to be able to use this 40" 1080p screen. After researching and tweaking settings, I re-read the specs on Amazon and found out that this is really a 720p LCD TV (capable of 1080i). Note the inconsistency in the Amazon description of this item...Product Features and Technical DetailsProduct Features * 40-Inch widescreen TFT LCD (1080p) is DTV-ready with dual ATSC/NTSC tunersTechnical Details * Brand Name: Coby * Model: TFTV4028 * Display Technology: LCD * Display Size: 40 inches * Image Aspect Ratio: 16:09 * Image Contrast Ratio: 1000:1 * Resolution: 720p * Refresh Rate: 60Also, the user manual and the box totally misleads the buyers. Page 22 of the manual, if falsely claims the TFT panel to have a Resolution of "1920x1080"... FALSE!!!So now I am downgrading this from a 2 star to a 1 star.Update 7/10/11:So I tried calling the 877# to ask why my TV is being reported as having a native resolution of 1366x768... well, it goes to a voicemail and the voicemail is full, so no one to answer the phone and no ability to leave a message (which would probably not be returned).See notes on what is 1366x768..[...]Hm... can't downgrade lower than a 1 star. There should be a 0 star.

4Pleasant TV for the price
By maryc65
I normally don't review items however since there are almost nil out there on this tv I wanted to voice my opinion. This tv rocks. I had been waiting to purchase a Vizio 42" model and saw this Coby at Shopko. It was on sale for an incredible price of just $399.99. I watched it for a bit and was appreciative of the picture quality even tho it was only hooked to 720. I knew once it was at 1080 it would improve. They were out and I got the raincheck and waited a week to get it home. The sound at first was tinny but the surround was off and once I turned that on It was much better however needs improvement so the 4 star rating. I did purchase a Vizio sound bar but am electronically challenged on gettin it to work. I need the S/pif cable I guess. Going to get one this weekend. This tv has the same hookups as the Vizio and an excellent picture. I love it so far! Great job Coby!

5This is a great TV
By D_deU
I spent months researching for a replacement TV in the master bedroom and finally settled on the Sony KDL32EX523. Set up was a snap - and I did it twice as I did not have a DVR in my bedroom - so I originally connected the TV directly to my Comcast cable (no box or DTA) and it was able to grab all my channels (I do not subscribe to premium services like HBO). A few days later, I added the DVR and was channel surfing in no time. (Well - actually had issues with Comcast to get their own DVR to receive their own signals, so a 1 star rating for Comcast - dang near switched to Direct TV during that process.) Adding the Sony to my wireless network was as simple as entering my network password into the TV (this model Sony has built in wireless - no need for external USB device), just like adding a computer - join the network it found, type in the password, and boom - connected. Initializing the TV to work with my Netflix account was just as simple - I logged into my Netflix account with my laptop - input the code from the TV - and boom - the TV blinked and was instantly added to Netflix. This Sony streams Netflix content better than my TIVO DVR in the other room which is right next to my wireless hub. Picture quality is great - no issues with viewing angle, no high pitched power supply sounds. I do not want to sound like a Sony commercial, but for my use, this is one great TV.

4Loaded with features... with room for improvement
By Dane A. Kantner
Overall this is a very nice TV. It's very thin. One of the bigger draws for me was the built in Internet Apps. I had actually returned a Vizio where nothing was working at all (Pandora literally crashed the TV) and got this. This is much better. I've tested a few other Internet App tvs and the speed of this Sony one is probably the fastest I've seen as far as menu navigation goes. And the menu is also well laid out. For some people it might almost be too many features. The Pandora app works well. There's lots of room for improvement in how it is actually designed (there are color codes on the menu, and they only associate one with a feature--skip--why not have one associated with thumbs up, thumbs down, etc). No good visual effects. But it works for what it needs to--playing music. The Qriocity video stuff doesn't work at all. I've never seen anything played through it, or even a choice of items to play. I don't know what the deal is, but my understanding is that Sony has been hacked recently and has completely shut the service down for now. It may as well not be there. The Amazon streaming on demand works REALLY well and is high quality. If you're an Amazon Prime member there is a fairly extensive selection of titles that become free when you authenticate with your Prime account. (The entire series of Inspector Gadget!)Netflix streaming was very high quality, but would constantly stop to buffer. It doesn't buffer enough of the content. It will "detect" network speed as you start anything up, but obviously this detection isn't very conservative or it would downgrade my quality in favor of better playback. As it's set up now, it's unusable. You can also download software onto your computer--PC, Mac, Linux, whatever--that will let you stream video, pictures, movies, etc off of the computer and right onto your TV. Google for DLNA software and there are any number of options, many free. Windows 7 has this built into Windows Media Player but there are plenty of other open source and paid apps that may offer more features than what Microsoft's built-in software does. It's a pretty cool feature though. The TV is aesthetically pleasing. I would say Sony has other TVs in the Bravia line that I like more, but I like this one too. And it's solid, well built. The form factor is thin. However, it's so thin that all of the ports come out back at a right angle, there is no bevel where they go in parallel to the back of the TV. Why is this an issue? If you mount the TV on a wall you may find that your cables themselves will prohibit you from using a wall mount that's slim. I have a new LG LED TV and what they do to get around this issue is use a proprietary dongle for the cables, you hook up a tiny dongle into the port instead, then that hangs down and you hook the cables into said dongle. No issue with mounting it very close to the wall when you have this. With this Sony, you may have to use a tilted wall mount to give you the clearance you need, or a wall mount that leaves a few inches of room between TV and wall. Or I guess you could buy a more expensive 45 degree HDMI cable and then it would probably work with just about any wall mount. The TV has Skype built in, but you need to buy the Skype camera/mic from Sony for another $130-150 for that to work. Out of curiosity I hooked up a Logitech USB webcam up to the TV to see if it recognized it and you could Skype with that, it didn't work. Not shocking, but good to know.I'm glad Sony has finally abandoned forcing their Memory Stick down our throats by integrating it into all of their products--no memory stick port on this TV. There are USB ports you can use a standard USB media reader to use.The TV does split screen, and does it fairly well. I can watch my HD cable box and HD antenna simultaneously (or HD cable and computer that's hooked up simultaneously, etc); I occasionally have gotten a "feature not supported" when trying to tune the channel and I can't figure out what I did out of order. Split screen is a feature that some other manufacturers seem to be removing, the aforementioned LG LED I bought doesn't have it...so don't take it for granted! It only has one component input... so at the moment I have no DVD player hooked up, it's basically going to force me to upgrade to a Blu-Ray with HDMI. The industry trend seems to be reducing the number of component inputs to 1 and increasing the number of HDMI inputs. The remote is decent. I used to really dislike Sony remotes, but this one is workable. The buttons are well laid out, well sized. It has buttons for Netflix and Qriocity, but no Pandora and no way to reprogram any buttons. It's not a "universal" remote, you can't program your stereo. I think the primary reason for this is the TV itself has built in "synch" capabilities to control other Sony devices such as your Sony stereo, etc., so of course if you have a full Sony line you're good but if not you'll need another remote. The TV has a feature called "control for HDMI" (which is branded as "Bravia Sync") which will send a control signal to a device through the HDMI. For the most part this only will function with Sony devices but I don't think it's necessarily closed to other devices, they just don't support it. So for example if you have a Blu-Ray hooked up via HDMI it could pause/start/play/etc your DVD through your TV's controls. It would be nice if my Comcast cable box was controllable by this, but I have a feeling I'll be canceling Comcast before they ever support this feature. The TV has a built in guide that populates over the air station information if you have a digital antenna hooked up. It works. I didn't have to configure it for my location, it just worked. It identified the stations, and filled in the guide data. It's nice to have a really functional guide for antenna stations as well as my cable box.One of the coolest features of this TV is its energy saving mode... The TV has a built in "Presence Sensor" that detects when you're not in the room for awhile and will then turn off the screen, and when you come back it turns the screen back on. It works well, and is on by default. Will this be the next horizon in American laziness though, never turning off the TV and just relying on this feature? Who knows. :)

4Good and could have been great
By M. Cohen
This TV is very good and could have been great if it were not for the crappy internet experience. The form factor itself is quite nice; very thin, light and sturdy, with a small bezel. It sets up very quickly and easily. The picture in HD is stunning: beautiful color, very sharp with very black blacks. However SD pictures are frequently fuzzy and a bit washed out which makes watching SD a drag. My 3 year old 32 inch Sony does SD much better than this one. The viewing angle is just ok. Looking straight on, the TV looks great. As you move to the side the pictures degrades quickly. At first I thought that the sound was below average. After tweaking the settings it now sounds quite good. If you are and audiophile you will however need an amp with separate speakers. I have not had a problem with the 60 hz refresh rate. I suppose it might be somewhat of a problem if I watched more sports. It is the internet interface which is the weakness of this TV. I have the 40EX523 with built in Wi-fi. No need for a separate dongle on this one. Loading times for most of the internet programs are quite slow - much slower than my beloved Roku box. Netflix interface is very poor. You can't search and it's even hard to see the titles of many of the movies on the screen because they are so small. The Sony Netflix picture is much worse than Netflix on the Roku box. Colors on the Sony Netflix are a bit washed out and the picture is not crisp. The Sony picture on both Hulu and Amazon seem almost as good as the Roku. Again the interface for both Hulu and Amazon is far worse than that of the Roku. Crackle is not even worth using. It takes forever to load, then has to keep re-loading despite fast internet download speeds. It's almost impossible to get back to where you left off on a movie. It operates so poorly that I am amazed that Sony includes it in the first place. They should make it work well or get rid of it. I would recommend buying this TV without internet connectivity (40EX520) and don't bother with the severely overpriced internet dongle. Do yourself a favor and buy a Roku box for $79 and use that for the streaming of TV shows and movies. It is far superior to anything that Sony has to offer on this TV. Sony engineers should study the Roku box and interface and use what they learn to improve this rather pathetic internet offering. Other than the internet, this really is a very good, satisfying TV.

2Viewing angle problems from bottom and sides
By SteveAnselmino
I compared this TV up against two other similar competitors: The LG 26LS3500 and the Samsung UN26EH4000. They're all 26" LCD TVs, and they're all within about $60 in price. I had a chance to see all three TVs side by side, and there's one striking difference: The viewing angles. All 3 TVs have a very good and similar looking picture straight on, but the Philips looks awful when you get past about 45° from the bottom, or about 60° from either the left or right sides. It's a pretty dramatic difference compared to the other two TVs. I was planning on mounting this TV high up on a wall where it would be viewed from both straight on, as well as from below (when you're up close to it). When looking up at it from below, all the colors are completely reversed! Even at a 30° angle from below, the colors already start to shift. It doesn't look nearly as bad from a high viewing angle, but since many people may be planning on mounting a TV like this high up on a wall (like in a bathroom or bedroom), you should know that there are other TV options for just $30-$60 more that would be a much wiser choice.

5doesnt play xvid or divx
By HRH Spider
only put it up this morning. its ok. picture clear and in my bedroom -not big- sound is good. but it will not play avi videos i have on usb stick that were encoded with xvid. format not accepted. it says will play motion jpg ..who the hell uses that . anyway i have a video player hook up to it and i put my usb stick in there and then watch it on tv. so for around $200 hopefully this bedroom tv will last a whilenov 16i am revising earlier 3 star review because with the addition of a $38 piece of equipment this tv is now awesome.the equipment is thishttp://www.amazon.com/Full-HD-Portable-Digital-Player-Drives/dp/B008NO9RRM/ref=bit_f_bds-p18_amznsearch_ff_us_title?_encoding=UTF8&ascsubtag=bOnug185Uv00U4&tag=bds-p18-amznsearch-us-ff-20&tagbase=bds-p18&tbId=bOnug185Uv00U4with the micca speck i no longer have to convert my downloaded avi to xvid or change ac3 audio codec to pcm or mp3 or convert mkv to avi. the micca speck plays all of them also i can just add subtitles to the usb drive with the same name of avi or mkv and do not have to make them hard subs..micca will play as they are.now the phillips tv has a wonderfully clear picture and the sound is terrific and i am hard of hearing. bear in mind that i am in a small normal sized bedroom.both of these items great

5Great Picture
By Tracer McLeod
The packaging for the TV is minimal but protects the TV smartly. I use this for tradeshows so its in and out of the box a lot. The actual TV is surprisingly lightweight and the picture quality of excellent - exactly what I expect from Philips.
