4only if size matters
By reycer
I originally bought the Samsung 60 inch model 7050 from Costco and I was very impressed with the picture and overall quality; I did have issues with the Samsung; like I could not get the Audio Return Channel to work. Since I bought the Samsung we remodeled our theater room and the new arrangement allowed for a bigger display. I have been eyeing the 70 inch sharp I was hesitant to get the larger Sharp because I did not feel I would keep the beautiful picture the Samsung offered right out of the box. When I exercised the incredible Costco return policy I came home with the Sharp Aquos LC-70C8470U and wall mounted this beast on to a brilliant articulating wall mount. To say the least, the entire family was impressed with the size of this thing. It was not that hard to see that the picture was not the quality of the Samsung. The picture looked a bit soft and the color uniformity seemed less than inspiring. Knowing that I had 90 days to test out this new monster I did not waste any time calibrating the set with my copy of the Digital Video Essentials (DVE) HD Basic Blu-Ray disc. I spent a night and the next morning trying to dial this TV in to give it a fair chance of surviving in my home. The following are the values I came up with after calibrating with the DVE Blu-ray disc. I use a PS3 Slim for my Blu-ray player and the video signal goes through my Onkyo 709 receiver. I am not sure if all Sharp displays come from the factory with the same video quality, but if they do, people who buy this TV should try the settings I found to work pretty good. In the end, the picture quality improved. The softness and color was brought back closer to what the Samsung was. I still think the Samsung offered an overall better picture but for now I am close with the Sharp 70 inch and the Audio Return Channel works as it should. The internet apps all work really near perfect. I have stopped using the PS3 and Xbox to access any of the things the Sharp offers. 3D content of the Samsung was superior and the Sharp is not bad either. For those looking for size the sharp will work well after adjusting the picture quality. If 60 inches is big enough than go with the Samsung.Sharp Aquos LC-70C8470UCalibration settings:OPC: offBacklight: +10Contrast: +30Brightness: +3Color: -2Tint: +8Sharpness: 0C.M.S. -Hue: R- +6 Y- -1 G- 0 C- +16 B- -14M- -7C.M.S. -Saturation R- -3 Y- 0 G- -4 C- +14 B- -4M- -6C.M.S. -Value R- 0 Y- +5 G- +5 C- +7 B- 0M- -2Color Temp: Med-HighR Gain (hi): -30G Gain (hi): -3B Gain (hi): +3Motion Enhancement: AquoMotion240Quad Pixel Plus 2 (advanced)Active contrast (off)Gamma Adjustment: 0Film mode (advanced)Digital Noise Reduction (Middle)Monochrome (off)

570" of 3D goodness.
By D. Knox
The Sharp LC70C8470U 70in 1080p Quattron 3D LED LCD TV w/ 3D Compatibility delivers a jaw dropping Picture and Theater quality 3D. I really have never been a fan of 3D films. I thought "Hmm... headaches poor picture quality, etc." After seeing Capt. Eo and Honey I Shrunk The Audience at the Kodak Theatre in Disneyland, I wasn't impressed and got headaches from both films which are short in length." This is what I figured would have the same or worse results from a TV and poor 3D effects because of the small screen when compared to a proper theater. All I have to say is that I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent quality of the Sharp LC70C8470U 70in 1080p Quattron 3D LED LCD TV.I have read complaints about this TV because of the "Soap oprah" effect on the picture when you watch it. Yes when you have all of the enhancements enabled it is going to cause the effect. All you have to do is turn these features off and voila all of these picture problems are gone. There is a reason the TV features multiple image modes.Insulting the PQ of the TV because you do not know how to setup the picture modes is cheap, read the manual before you give a poor rating to the TV. And if you dislike the TV that much keep in mind that Amazon has a liberal return policy. Here is my personal setup: Bluray and HD channels on my cable box need all enhancements turned off, 480i SD is appropriate for turning on the enhanced modes. A hybrid works well for me when I play PS3Avatar in 3D, and all of the IMAX films are simply breathtaking. Even Micheal Bay's Transformers: Dark of the Moon looks fab. As a matter of fact only a few Bluray's look bad in 3D, namely Harry Potter 7 part 1, a film that was filmed in 2D and converted to 3D. If you have the cash, buy the Sharp LC70C8470U 70in 1080p Quattron 3D LED LCD TV, you will not be disappointed. My only suggestion is that if you are a Costco member, order it from their website. It is $3199 minus $400 online discount, and free shipping. As a final note: buy a TV screen protector at least 1/4" Lucite. My 3 year old cratered my last LCD Flatscreen TV by throwing a toy into the screen HARD. I also have read of many people doing the same when they have lost control of their Wii controllers or PS3 Move controllers embedding them into their poor TVs. A 2-3 hundred dollar investment in a TV protector will pay you back in spades if you have a hard object hit the TV. I learned the hard way.

55 Star Value
By CM Rater
I was looking to upgrade from sony SXRD 60XBR2, which has been spectacular since 2006. I just felt it was time to upgrade to a large LED Flat screen with 3D (for my grandson :)). Ever since the2012 CES, I had been waiting for the new Samsung UN65ES8000. However, between the horrible reviews of the 60" version and the whole ES line for that matter as well as the fact that a best buy magnolia rep called it their "worst" TV, I gave up on the ES despite how nice I thought it looked aesthetically. That said the Sharp look is also very attractive, encased in a classic black enclosure which looks great with my black Omni mirage speakers. In my search for the very best, I also came across the Sharp Pioneer Elite. I have seen great reviews of the Sharp Elite TV. I saw it at Best Buy, but they had its own special HD Blu Ray running in a separate area so it was difficult to compare to the others on display. Since I have noticed that the quality of the input makes a tremendous difference in the picture quality it made me feel that they didn't want a direct comparison. I am sure that it is a great TV as the reviews are great, but at a rather exorbitant price. While I could afford the $7000+, I simply couldn't justify the 3X cost vs the lc-70le847u. In fact, the other day I noticed that CNET had reduced the rating of the Sharp Elite from a 5 to a 4 star due to its excessive price and poor value. I'd be willing to pay 50-100% or so more for the ultimate picture, but not 3X. As I was finishing this review, Samsung just announced their UN75ES9000, a 75inch set selling for $9-10K. Looks very cool, but again at what price? Compare that to the top of the line 80 inch sharp (lc-80le844u) with outstanding reviews for under $5K. $9-10K for 5 inches less and shabby reviews for the ES line; are they serious?Back to the lc-70le847u. All in all, this TV is quite impressive at 70 inches. I have found that the quality of the TV picture is directly related to the quality of broadcast. There are scenes that are as sharp as you could possibly imagine and others where the resolution is simply poor due to the broadcast/camera quality and no TV can make up for that. Blu Ray DVDs are fantastic. Even normal tv looks 3D. On the other hand, I can see the "softness" factor referred to in other reviews, but not enough to affect my overall rating. I bought the Disney WOW Picture calibration disc and have adjusted the picture to a very satisfactory setting. In addition, another reviewer on Amazon provided some very helpful calibration settings which we were much better than the factory settings. I highly recommend you try his settings.I am extremely satisfied with this TV. I ended up buying this on Sears.com for $2,400 from a Bountii price alert. You gotta love some of the Sears sale prices. I am really glad that I got the extra 5 inches vs. Samsung 65ES8000 and for about $1400 less. If anything, I'd go bigger next time. The sharp has plenty of apps, and I thought that apps would be really useful. We use the Skype app but oddly enough I find that I spend most of my time watching TV programs and Blu Rays on what is after all, a TV. The 3D is great, but some 3D movies are much better than others(Journey to the Center of the Earth is amazing!). One reason I went with the extraordinary value of the sharp was that it didn't obligate me to amortize the value of a much more expensive set over 5-10 years to justify the investment. So I'll monitor the market over the next couple of years, and can buy another set if I choose as technology gets better and cheaper with the money left over. In the meantime I remain very satisfied with this set!

4Very happy with the E7000
By J. mamrosh
I purchased the Samsung E7000 a few weeks ago and am extremely happy with the picture quality and features of this TV. I had recently purchased the Panasonic ST50 but had issues and Amazon quickly and painless exchanged and took care of for me...they are outstanding. I am not a fanboy of either brand and with the ST50, couldn't get comfortable, even with the great reviews it gets. I went with the E7000 over the E8000 as the 8000 had many gadgets/apps that I wouldn't use and didnt warrant the extra cost. From reading the AVS and High Def Junkies forums, I will try to give some of my opinions on common issues/thoughts etc. - Buzzing - I have no significant buzzing or humming. All plasma's make a buzz sound from what I have read but mine does not have anything that is bothersome to myself or that my family has commented on. I have heard of some people having issues with this but I have not. I have seen/heard 3 sets (2 e7000 and 1 e6500) and none have had issues.- I have had no image retention/burn in. I do not watch something for 8 hours straight or game the day away however. I have played Call of Duty for a few hours - no issue. Family member left DVR paused for few hours - no issue. I did run the 4 day slides to break in the tv. I have read that you should so I did. Why not try to deter problems and maximize the TV?! It's a pain to wait but worth it.- Reflections from screen. The glass panel does have reflections when comparing to matte finish of LCD/LED. Thats just how it goes. This TV definitively has easily manageable glare however. In my den I have 2 sliding doors to the rear of the room which are directly opposite of the TV - about 20 feet away. It gets morning light. The sliders have built in blinds which I generally keep closed. If I didn't have the blinds, I would possibly consider drapes. With TV off, seems reflective IMO. Once I turn it one, picture masks the reflection well and I seldom have any issue. About 4 feet from the tv on the ceiling I have a fan and light. Same thing, when the TV is on, looks fine. To the left front of TV (TV mounted kitty corner) there is a window that I keep open and it doesnt affect anything- Picture - OUTSTANDING - sharp, crisp, clear, lots of adjustment, dark levels can be adjusted, brightness is there and it just right for me! Blu-ray is amazing. I enjoyed my 3 year old Sharp Aquos 52" and Samsung LCD but this TV night and day. The viewing angle is also much better than my Sharp and my Samsung. Motion blur - whats that? This is so much nicer watching fast motion than my other tvs.I watch a lot of TWC high def. tv and stream Netflix. Streaming in Smart Hub works great - very responsive and picture quality is great. I havent tried many other apps but they are plentiful. I also havent tried 3D yet.I would highly recommend this TV to friends and family with the caveat that it is a plasma, so there are some preparations and precautions that you should research a little on and be aware of. They are easily found at the two forums I mentioned above. I should also mention that after I broke in the TV, I followed some recommended settings found on CNET and then adjusted with the Disney WoW disk I bought here at Amazon. Really helped bring out the picture with some fine tuning. The cons - well, maybe there is another plasma out there that gives you a little better darks but IMHO, that doesnt make up for the clarity and sharpness of this plasma. Sound is pretty good in itself but I am used to hooking up to surround system. Every TV is going to have some weaknesses to each person, so expect something - from any brand.Hope this helps in some peoples decisions - I am no videophile but have researched and educated myself somewhat in purchasing a plasma and this one in particular. Also - be sure to register at Samsung's website for an extra 3 months warranty.Amazon delivery - out of this world. Ordered on weekend - delivered via Pilot and local carrier Thursday.

3Great picture but I can't get past the loud buzzing
By LnA
I was looking for something to replace my 52" Sharp LCD, as I moved it into a secondary room, and spent a lot of time trying to decide between the e7000 and the Panasonic VIERA TC-P60GT50 60-Inch 1080p 120Hz Full HD 3D Plasma TV. After seeing a great deal on the e7000, $1800 with a free Samsung HW-E450 Wireless AirTrack Sound Bar, I was pushed to make that my purchase. After getting the TV setup I immediately noticed the buzzing. Some buzzing in plasmas is normal but, the buzzing of the e7000 was loud enough to be distracting when sitting 10'+ away with the volume at a medium low level, although the buzzing is significantly reduced if sitting off center (>~40 degrees) of the TV. I did some searching online to see what might alleviate the issue and found a few suggestions such as lowering contrast, brightness, and cell light settings, but none of those things worked. I thought I might be able to deal with the buzz and was able to watch a blu ray version of WALL-E, which looked amazing, with the sound turned up to drown it out. After a few more days and trying a few more things I decided the buzzing was too much and called Amazon about getting a replacement, the process was quick and easy. I boxed up the e7000 and within two days they sent someone out to drop off the replacement and to take away the original. Upon powering it up, I again immediately noticed the buzz on the replacement and it is the same if not worse than on the original.Reports I've seen online indicate some people have had to go through 4 or 5 replacements before getting one with an acceptable level of buzz. So at this point I'm not sure if I want to try for yet another e7000 replacement or if I should go ahead and get the Panasonic GT50 which at the moment is priced lower than the e7000.A few notes about my TV setup:I have the TV sitting on its stand, so when sitting on the couch my head is aligned almost dead center with the TV. The buzzing is less noticeable if I stand, crouch down low, or I am off to the side. So for those of you that plan on wall mounting the TV at a height above your head the buzzing may not be an issue for you. I've also been using the sound bar through ARC(HDMI Audio Return Channel) which sounds much better than the built in speakers, but the buzz is present with or without an external speaker connected. Some other things I tried to reduce buzzing with no success: - Unplug other items from power strip - Plug TV directly into wall outlet - Move TV further away from/closer to the wall - Tried various input sources, DVR through HDMI, PS3 through HDMI, analog cable, XBOX 360 through component, and no sources connected at allUPDATE (8/8/2012):I ended up returning the E7000 and going with the GT50. Finally no buzzing! I wasn't able to compare the units side by side but the pictures seem very comparable. I will say I preferred the Samsung stand, as it swivels for the 60" while the Panasonic does not, and menus but after a few hours of use I am satisfied with the GT50 its performance and the fact that it does not have an audible buzz at viewing distance.

4Excellent "white glove" installation! Stunning picture
By Steve
Just received my PN51E7000. I was surprised that the Amazon shipping through CEVA also included "white glove" setup. The driver brought the unit into the house, removed it from the box, attached it to the stand, and powered it up to verify operation. He offered to remove the box and packaging, but I wanted to keep it just in case I need to return. This service was included in the free shipping. As for the TV itself - the picture is stunning, but I'll have to play with it for a few days.Note that it does NOT have a VGA port for connecting a computer - only HDMI. On the plus side, it does have one HDMI port that support audio return channel (ARC) to send sound from the TV apps (e.g. Pandora) back to the A/V receiver without using the digital audio output. Also, Samsung doesn't seem to have an Amazon app for streaming video.Four stars for now, but I may upgrade to five after I've had more time to judge the picture quality.

5Vizio rocks! Best bang for the buck deal! Amazing 65" price.
By Pat
So our Samsung 720 61" Rear DLP color wheel died again and it was time for a replacement. I know I can fix the samsung with a $150 part, AGAIN, but it's getting old. I did the rounds, checked Sams, Costco, and BestBuy. Found this model as the best bang for the buck. I ended up getting mine from Costco for $1299 which was cheaper than Amazon's price, but now, two days later, it looks like Amazon has dropped their price with free shipping to basically match Costco's price with tax. But still, can't beat the extra warranty and ease of replacement I get with having purchased at Costco. I buy so much from Amazon (absolutely love prime!), but large TV's like this, I just don't see the point in going online if you are lucky and can get the same deal (even after tax) locally. I read SamsClub is going to have these for BlackFriday doorbuster price of $1000 (no raincheck), but I don't feel like waiting in line overnight only to loose out, and I needed a tv now for the family room. There is a 3D version of this TV for a few hundred more. SamsClub had this on display. Wow, the front of the 3D version is like a mirror. Just standing back looking at all the TVs, the 3D version of this one was just terrible with so many reflections. I would have paid the few hundred extra for 3D, but it just didn't seem worth it to have to put up with distracting reflections for the majority of our TV viewing just for that very rare 3D movie. I do not know what they were thinking on why they made that 3d version front so reflective. I tried some 3D tvs at BestBuy and just did not like what I saw. 2D is what most stuff is anyways, so I scratched 3D off our list.So on to this TV.Assembly - I was amazed I was actually going to need some tools! The instructions actually call for you to place the TV FACE DOWN onto a ledge (dining room table?) so that you can attach the bottom stand mount. No way was I going to do that. I placed it backside on some towels and then just carefully attached the plate from the bottom.Instructions - There are basically none! Just a quick start guide.Inputs - This is one possible future downside. Only 3 HDMI inputs. 2 on the back, 1 on the side, ALTHOUGH, at least the one on the side is still in quite a ways so I don't need to worry about the cable sticking out the side. Still, I don't understand why they can't provide at least 4 or 5 inputs. But 3 is fortunately enough for me.Remote - In setting up the TV, the remote was quite nice. The keyboard is really useful for typing things in now. The buttons at the top of the front though don't feel that good though. When I press the NetFlix button, I feel a click. But not when I press the two outside buttons.Sound - The speakers are on the backside. But since I send all our sound through a Yamaha receiver, I didn't care what the TV sounded like so I can't offer any opinion on that.TV Stand - I can see how some might consider it a "little" flimsy. I'm not worried at all though. If I grab the side for example to feel/push some of the buttons, it does move a little, but I don't think this is a big deal.So I finally turned it on. It takes about 30 seconds till the image is up. Right away the TV goes into setup mode. It was very easy to follow the instructions. I quickly got the wifi connected. I dont' broadcoast our SSID and I use WPA2 but it was still very easy to type everything in. It quickly connected. I was able to easily rename the HDMI1 input to DirecTv, the remote's keyboard really helps. Finally, some TV! I open the DirecTv guide and it is so clear. Everything just pops. Wow, what a picture. It's just so clear and sharp. And the blacks are amazing. I had some SciFi shows recorded on the DVR and fired up some black dark scenes and it was just amazing. I could not believe some of the details I was able to now see. Absolutely blows away our old 720p DLP. I'm not a picky person but for the first time ever, my wife actually made some comments about the color though. She "thought" the color was a bit dulled. I thought it was fine. I played around with some picture settings. She really liked "Vivid", it was fine for me too, maybe a little on the aggressive color side. In the end, we just went with "Custom" and turned down the brightness a little. Even though this is an EdgeLit LED, I was not able to see any uneven lighting, everything seemed uniform to me.Watching some HD network shows that evening, I will say, the TV is so sharp and clear, that it's just such a new experience. Like the shows were shot with some new type of camera!Later that night, it was time to reprogram our logitech remote. Connected the logitech remote to my PC, and logitech found the model number for this tv. Great! In no time, I had the TV turning on/off and switching inputs. Finally, I decided to play around with the apps. This is where things got a little frustrating. I pressed the amazon button at the top of the remote since we have prime. I'm pretty certain that remote button clicked the first time, but it doesn't anymore. The TV popped something up, but that went away, and now, pressing that button again, nothing would happen. So I pressed the big middle button on the remote and I see the apps popup at the bottom. I scrolled through them but didn't see amazon anywhere. So I checked the "quick start" guide again and there are two pages that did help a little. Followed some instructions, opened the app store, tv downloaded some kind of update, eventually I was back in the app store. I was able to remove alot of apps that I know I wouldn't use like NetFlix, Facebook, Twitter, etc. I did add Amazon and AccuWeather. For amazon, it gives you a code that you then need to enter from your computer to activate that device. Eventually I was watching a prime movie. Nice! The apps are a bit slow though. Quite a few times it would show a "working" like cursor and you just were stuck and had to be patient. I also really dislike icon only based apps (especially when the icons are so small) and wonder what exactly those icons mean at the bottom of the left bar. I was able to click on them. One of them closes the bar, the other did something, but don't rememeber. The apps do require a bit of excessive up/down/left/right/ok/back type navigation. I didn't buy the TV for the apps though, but it's nice they are there. In the end, this is a killer tv deal for it's size and price. Without a doubt, this is a keeper! I remember buying our first Vizio many many years ago when they first came out, and since then, all future tv purchases, after carefully shopping around, also ended up being Vizios. The Samsung DLP was the last one. And now, that too is replaced with a Vizio. Haven't had a single problem with any of our other Vizio's.I am extremely happy with this purchase.UPDATE: 12/3/12Edge Lit: I think I now know what some people may mean by non-uniform edge lighting, but I had to have all the lights off at night in a totally dark room and I could only notice it during the tv startup. And the uneven edge lighting is more discernible from extreme off axis viewing, again only while tv was turning on, during that 30 second delay. From straight on, it was less. Essentially there is some more lighting that is noticeable in the corners of the tv. Once fully on and watching TV, I just couldn't spot it.Remote: I guess I jinxed myself when I mentioned I hadn't had any problems with our prior vizio's. My initial comment about the remote buttons that were not clicking, it seems maybe one was stuck, my amazon button, as my amazon bar started popping up for no reason. Fortunately, we use a logitech for most stuff so I put the vizio remote away. I called up Vizio support, registered my TV, explained the stuck button, and a new remote was shipped out to me. New remote came and it works great! All the buttons, including the amazon button, have a nice click feeling to them. Awesome support!!!The TV has an ambient light sensor. It tries to auto adjust the brightness depending on what the light levels are in the room. I found this option when poking around the menus. It has sensitivity settings for off, low, medium, and high. Over the past month, on a few occasions during night tv viewing, I have noticed the tv brightness dynamically change even though the ambient light levels did not. Isn't a big deal for me, it's only done it like 2 or 3 times. I like the feature actually, it seems to be doing it's job. At night, the image is not too bright and during the day, the image is bright and pops.UPDATE: 12/16/12While the logitech site did have this model in their database, and things worked for me initially, after I hooked up my remaining devices I ran into some issues switching inputs and found the database did not have discrete remote codes for power or input switching for this model. Luckily I found another vizio model, E421VA, and when I reprogrammed my harmony 650 remote using this tv instead, I was able to solve my problems and now the tv correctly turns on and switches inputs when choosing different activities.

565" WIFI LED TV FOR LESS THAN $1500!?
By Michael Quinlan
At $1500 or less, the value of the VIZIO M650VSE blows the competition out of the water, no one else comes close to offering a 65" LED smart tv for $1500 or less. In the current market for tvs, there's a huge price point difference between 60" and 65" which may change over time, but I've personally been trolling websites for months and this is the first 65" tv with wifi capabilities below $1500. I did not hesitate to order it online when this became available. Being an LED is a huge and unexpected bonus.I've been on the VIZIO website a lot before pulling the trigger and they have two model series, model E and model M. Model E is offered in 60" and 70", and looks super sleek, the frame itself is super thin. For whatever reason it's not offered on 65" otherwise I'd scoop that up. The model M is their only 65" model and its frame is slightly chunky by comparison.I'm curious why there aren't more reviews of this product? Why is VIZO's only model in their Model M series their chunky 65" model, while their Model E series has a thinner frame and comes in 60" or 70". Are they both new products? If so why make the 65" inferior?I also went all in and bought a soundbar, the VIZIO VHT215, because I figured they would integrate, great reviews online. While the tv only has 3 HDMI inputs, you can run two additional HDMI devices through the soundbar. As an extra bonus feature the back of the remote has a keyboard, good luck finding that anywhere else.

4Stunning Picture With Little to No Error in Perfection
By R. Calderon
First off, let me say I have been a loyal VIZIO customer for at least 4 years and own all VIZIO TV's. I have had only one issue with a VIZIO TV in the past and that was QA issue, there was nothing functionally wrong with it. This TV was purchased on BF from Sam's Club. With that being said..I have experienced a "glitch" with my TV where, the picture will go out and come back in after a couple of seconds, with the audio staying perfect intact. This occurs with any of the 3 HDMI slots, as well as the component slot, with all known working cables. VIZIO also has an issue with this TV where if you use WPA2 settings for your WIFI security, the remote becomes very unresponsive, if you don't use WPA2, it works fine. I have tested this and can say this is all true. I, however do not use the remote, and use a Universal remote, but please be aware of this if you are considering purchasing this TV and use WPA2.The picture is beautiful, when it doesn't go in and out. When playing a movie on Blu ray, the crispness and motion flaw is superior. If you are a sports fan like myself, it's very hard to comment on. Some of the channels I watch, ESPN, FSN, YES, etc. the colors vary. Some are over saturated and others aren't (ESPN). Watching the main channels (ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC) all seem to be in tune with one another. The sound coming from the TV, sounds good, but I don't use them as I have a 7.1 receiver for my sound, but the built-in speakers are up to par with the big boys (Samsung, Panasonic).I do have the Disney WoW Calibration disc to calibrate the colors and settings for my TV. However, I am using the current settings below which are satisfying so far. Once I do a full calibration, I will post an edit with those settings to share. For now, use the below and you should be good to go.Backlight - 82Brightness - 49Contrast - 56Color - 70Tint - -2Sharpness - 6Horizontal Position - 32Vertical Position - 16Horizontal Size - 0Vertical Size - 0Color Temperature - CustomAll RGB Gains/Offsets - 50Smooth Motion Effect - OffNoise Reduction - LowMPEG NR - LowColor Enhancement - OffAdaptive Luma - OffFilm Mode - AutoBacklight Control - OffAmbient Light Sensor - OffI MUST reiterate, this TV does have an issue if you use WPA2 for security and does experience a glitch where the picture goes out and comes back after a couple of seconds. I did notify VIZIO of this, however, they claimed there are no known issues with this TV. I find that hard to believe. If you check AVSForum's official M650VSE thread, you will see some of these issues. I sure do not want to have to take down a 65" TV that weighs close to 100 pounds off a wall, that is 6 feet off the ground.Until the picture issue is resolved, I am giving this a 4/5 stars. I would rate it a 3/5, but the remote feature I will not be using with the TV.Edit 12/13: I made changes last night to the TV and did not experience the "glitch" I previously posted. I will do some more digging this weekend and will update this review with my findings.Edit 12/15: I made the following comment on my post and am repeating it here.. It seems after I made this review, VIZIO has made a firmware update and I received it, even though after contacting their support a couple of days ago and claiming there were no known issues, I can verify I am no longer seeing the picture go out and come back in after a couple of seconds. Again I don't use VIZIO's remote, so I can't confirm anything regarding the WPA2 security use and the delay being resolved. The current firmware is that of: 3.43.847. I will be using the Disney WoW Calibration disc this weekend to update the settings above to the best of my 20/20 vision and have updated my stars on this from 4/5 to 5/5.Edit 12/16: I made revisions to the settings above the only major change I made was the tint from 0 to -2 and added the backlight that I forgot which is set at 52. Again this was used using the Disney WoW Calibration Disc.Edit 12/18: I have noticed the TV doing the same issue in my review with the picture randomly going out and coming back on. VIZIO customer support can't figure out the issue and are replacing the TV entirely. Not very happy to take down a TV that is 95lbs and is mounted 6 feet high. I am not recommending this TV until the replacement comes and I know the issue has been resolved.Edit 12/29: I talked to VIZIO again, this time someone who had some knowledge. He said to up the Backlight to around 80-85. Since doing that I have not noticed the TV going out (this has been 3-4 days now). I have since cancelled my service request. I'm rating this back to 4 stars. Since there is a 1 year warranty, I will see how things go in the weeks/months to come. If anything changes, I will update as necessary.

5Killer TV
By George Capen
Hitachi makes a killer TV. I was set to buy a Vizio 240hz TV blah, blah, blah, then I actually looked at this one and it was just better. Better or more realistic picture and a better price. I was all hung up on contrast ratio, Hz, etc and what I remembered when I watched was this TV just has a great picture. I have since learned that most top makers are no longer going to talk contrast etc. because it can be misleading. Hope this helps, George

5Excellent Picture and Value
By ATX Fan
After lots and lots of research I stopped by a local warehouse club to see the sets in person. When I walked in I was all set to purchase a 42" LG, but after seeing all of the sets side by side, the Hitachi L42S503 really stood out. I realize that they are not all calibrated correctly at the store, but this set did not disappoint when I got it home. After some minor color calibration tweaks the image as outstanding. I highly recommend this TV for anyone looking for a great value without compromising on quality.

5Hitachi L42S503 a winner!
By Steven M. Angelini
I purchased this 42" LCD about a month or so ago after a lot of research and shopping around. I did all of my due diligence with regard to seeing all comparable sets in person to get up close and personal with the options. etc. Hitachi makes a top notch product and does have great customer service as well. In fact, I have only called them once since installing the TV and it wasn't even a question with regard to the LCD but moreso about an issue that turned out to be the interaction with my Blu-ray player and they took the time to troubleshoot the issue with success. Not to mention it was a painless wait to get to a support specialist and it wasn't outsourced but rather based in California. This TV has a very sharp picture with true vibrant color that is spot on. I barely changed any of the factory settings with regard to the picture. The sound is decent but took some fiddling with the setups. I typically always watch this TV through the surround sound system plus I'm no audiophile so it's fine for me when running through the unit speakers. The backlight can be a little bright in the corners from time to time but it is ONLY visible when the screen is completely black. You can eliminate this if you chose to do so by setting it to a lower level. I love the picture as is and have opted to leave it be. The trade off is the best picture I feel the TV has to offer...no biggie.I shopped around for a while to get the best deal and ended up purchasing this at Sam's Club for $747 in early December 09'. Absolutely worth the price and in my opinion it is a superior unit over comparable Vizeo's, Samsungs, etc...

4Sharp Aquos LC52D43U satisfied with Non HD quality
By RM
My primary goal was to get a large screen TV that is good with regular Non HD channels because most of the channels that my family watches are Non HD being Indian language channels which may take a few years to convert to HD. So I recently purchased an LCD from a big name TV maker 46 inch 1080P and did not have a very good image when viewing Non HD Indian satellite channels. I am not sure if this is just an issue with that particular set or with the model itself. I returned that TV and got a Sharp LC52D43U and am much satisfied with the image of Non HD channels. The packaging, the stand and overall externals also looked quite good. I cannot rate the reliability of the Sharp TV because I have had it for just a week but the picture quality for Non HD is good. There are two dimensions to enjoying a large screen TV. One is the larger image and the other is the better quality / higher resolution picture. If you watch a lot of Non HD content, it is best to ask the sales person to hook up the TV of interest to an antenna or regular cable and test the set out for the picture quality because there are a lot of large screen 1080P TVs out there that have poor picture quality for Non HD channels.

5Great TV

5Great budget TV
By frank
I have had this tv for about a year now. I'm very happy with it. When I was contemplating which tv I would buy, I had to figure out if I wanted 720p or 1080p, or if I wanted a plasma or LCD. I decided to go with an LCD because I didn't want my tv watching or video game playing to be hindered by the thought of burn in or image retention. Although it really isn't that big of an issue, especially nowadays, I figured that a small drop in picture quality would make up for me not worrying about it.Anyway, I really didn't have an idea of what TV I wanted, but I wanted it to be cheap and big, and that pretty much ruled out 1080p. Also, the fact that at this size, if you are sitting back 10 feet or so, you won't even be able to notice the difference between 720 and 1080.Anyway, I ended up seeing a really good deal on this last year, and although I couldn't find much info on the set online, anything I could find was favorable. I bought the tv and I am very happy with my purchase. The image quality is great (for HD and Blu ray). One thing that is necessary though is to sit far enough away. If you are sitting within 7 feet, the picture can get pixelated, but if you are more than 10 feet away, it looks great. The colors seem to be pretty accurate, and the black levels seem good for an lcd.Standard definition is pretty good as well, but there is a serious quality difference when you flip between hd and standard channel (which is to be expected). Also it takes maybe 2 seconds to switch between a standard channel to an hd channel. This is because it has to switch to 480i to 720p. Not too big a deal, but it is worth a mention. One con I can think of is the sound quality. The speakers on the tv don't get that loud, and it can sometimes be hard to hear dialogue on a dvd or blu ray if there is a fan going or if there is any background noise at all. The volume goes from 0 to 60, but it seems as though the sound doesn't increase much at all between 30 and 60. This was only a problem with dvd's and blu rays playing from my ps3 though, because when I was watching digital cable it was always loud enough. I ended up solving this problem by just getting a sony surround sound system though. Also, this only has 2 hdmi ports. This isn't really too big of an issue because hdmi splitters can be bought for cheap, if you ever even need an extra hdmi port.Overall I would say that my experience with this tv has been great. There are definitely tv's with better picture, but if you can get this tv for around 1,000 I would say it would be a steal. As long as you give yourself 10-12 feet of viewing distance (which really you should do with any tv this size), this tv looks great. Honestly, unless you are willing to pay hundreds more for a slight increase in picture quality, you should check this out.
